FPC Alderson is a standalone, minimum-security federal prison camp in Alderson, West Virginia, housing women exclusively. It is the oldest federal women's prison in the United States, originally opened in 1927. No perimeter fence, no armed towers — the physical setup here is unlike most federal facilities.

When I was at a minimum-security camp, the biggest surprise wasn't the rules — it was how much more responsibility she carries for her own outcome. At a camp, the doors aren't locked. That means she has to drive her own programming, her own waitlist requests, her own FSA credit tracking. The women who leave earliest are the ones who treated day one like it mattered.

The no-fence setup can fool families into thinking things are looser than they are. They aren't. The BOP still controls every mechanism that determines when she comes home. One incident report at Alderson can pull a halfway house date just as fast as it would at a medium. The stakes don't drop with the security level.

EBRR programs and Productive Activities generate FSA time credits under the First Step Act — but only if her PATTERN risk score is accurate and her case manager is applying them correctly. Minimum security means the least restrictive setup in the federal system. FPC Alderson has no perimeter fence and no armed guard towers. Women live in dormitory-style cottage housing, not cell blocks, and the most qualified can be assigned to off-site work details at community locations and nearby military bases.
