How This First Step Act Calculator Works

This free First Step Act calculator estimates the earliest possible release date for a federal inmate by applying the credits and reductions available under federal law and BOP policy.

The calculation includes Good Conduct Time (GCT), First Step Act time credits (FTC), and RDAP reduction. The result is an estimate for planning purposes — the Bureau of Prisons determines the official release date.

Found your date? Use our BOP inmate tracker to monitor for release date changes automatically.

Good Conduct Time vs. First Step Act Credits

Good Conduct Time (GCT)

Automatically awarded at 54 days per year of sentence for inmates with sentences over 12 months. GCT can be lost due to disciplinary infractions.

First Step Act Time Credits (FTC)

Earned through program participation: 10 days per month for all inmates, or 15 days per month for those with Minimum or Low PATTERN risk scores after two consecutive assessments. Up to 365 days can reduce the prison sentence.

RDAP Reduction

Up to 12 months off the sentence for eligible inmates who complete the Residential Drug Abuse Program.

What Affects Your Release Date

  • • PATTERN risk score (determines 10 vs 15 day earning rate)
  • • Disciplinary infractions (can lose GCT)
  • • Program participation and completion
  • • Detainers or pending charges
  • • Immigration holds or removal orders
  • • Disqualifying offenses for FTC
