Medium security has a different weight to it than a camp. I felt it the first time I was in a medium — the standing counts, the controlled moves, the fact that you need a callout just to get to the library. At FCI Beckley specifically, the administration has hosted external university groups including criminology students and professors for facility tours, which in my experience signals a facility that at least tries to maintain visible programming standards. That matters, because it usually means the education department is functional and not just a checkbox.

The no-RDAP situation is the most important practical issue for families. If your LO was sentenced with a judicial recommendation for RDAP, or if completing it is part of the release plan, a transfer request has to go through the unit team in writing — and it has to go in early. Medium security means double-fencing, controlled movement, and structured counts throughout the day. It's a step up from a camp in every way that affects daily life — your LO can't move freely between areas and interaction with staff follows a more formal protocol.
